The Richardson Family

The Richardson and Gaulden families were closely connected through marriage and migration. John Gaulden Richardson was a descendant of the Gaulden line through his mother, Martha Gaulden Richardson, and his life reflects the broader movement of the Richardson family from South Carolina into Mississippi in the early nineteenth century. The Richardson migration into Wilkinson County formed the foundation for later movements into Louisiana.

The Gaulden and Richardson families migrated together, beginning in South Carolina and continuing into Mississippi Territory around 1808. Their settlement patterns show a consistent westward movement shared by both kin groups.

Francis DuBose Richardson, a member of the same extended family, left memoirs describing the family’s experiences in South Carolina, Mississippi, and Louisiana, including details of settlement, social conditions, and the challenges faced during frontier expansion.

Military service further linked the families. Zachariah Brumfield Gaulden, a member of the Gaulden line, and his nephew James Brumfield Richardson both served in Hinds’s Battalion of Mississippi Cavalry during the War of 1812. They were in the same company and participated in the New Orleans campaign under General Andrew Jackson.

The life of James Brumfield Richardson included significant financial decline. Records document his loss of property, accumulation of debt, and eventual insolvency. His circumstances deteriorated to the point that he died at the Louisiana State Insane Asylum at Jackson.

Susan Tullia Richardson, daughter of James Brumfield Richardson, represents the continuation of the Richardson line into Louisiana. Her life reflects the family’s movement westward and the persistence of kinship ties despite the instability surrounding her father’s decline.

A later descendant, Forest G. Gaulden, illustrates the geographic spread of the extended family into Texas. He died of tuberculosis and is buried in Kerrville, Texas, marking the far western reach of the Gaulden–Richardson lineage.

Together, these individuals form a documented chain of migration, military service, personal hardship, and geographic expansion linking the Gaulden and Richardson families across South Carolina, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas.
