Susanna Robinett of Wiltshire and William Goldinge

This posted is associated with the chapter entitled The Quaker Line: Quaker Roots Robinett and Dove. The surname Robinett is of importance because of the known history of a man named Alan Robinett who went to Pennsylvania and purchased a plot of land from William Penn. He himself was not a Quaker but he was able to buy land in Chester where (according to Laura Gaulden) John Gaulding and his wife Anne Stewart settled before they made their move to New Kent County, Virginia. It is not known if there was a family connection between Alan Robinett of Chester, Pennsylvania and Susanna Robinett of Wiltshire who married William Goldinge. There does not appear to be one.

WILLIAM "OF WILTSHIRE" GOLDINGE, the son of Thomas Goldinge of Meysey Hampton, Gloucestershire, England and Phillis Unknown of the same place was born about 1566 in Meysey Hampton, Gloucestershire, England (1) and he died on 03 Feb 1628 in Downton, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. (2) He was buried on 23 February 1628 (3) in Downton. (4) He married Susanna ROBINETTE of Wiltshire, but the names of her parents is not known. She was born in 1577 in Downton, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England and she died on 04 Dec 1625 in Downton, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. She is not the same Susanna who married a man named Cripps because according to the Wiltshire, England, Marriages 1538-1837 the marriage of William Goulding of Maisey Hampton, Gloucestershire married Susanne Crips, a widow on 20 January 1611. (5) This was considerably after William Goulding married Susanna Robinette and may have been a second marriage for both of them, if the man named in the Wiltshire Marriage Record is the same William. That is not confirmed, but there is a notation on this record “nee Burt”, meaning that her maiden name was Burt? Not known.

SUSANNAH ROBINETT, the wife of William “of Wiltshire” Goldinge was born about 1577 (7) in Downton, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England (8) and she died on 04 December 1625 in Downton, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. (9) The names of her parents is not known. She was buried in the same place on the same day 04 December 1625. (10) She and William Goldinge were married in 1596 in Downton and it is possible he later married a widow named Susannah Cripps (11), whose maiden name may have been Burt. (12) This is not proven.

Her children with William Goldinge were Francis, Martha, Margaret, Elizabeth, Thomas, Susannah, Christopher, Mary and Edward. Only two of her children survived to adulthood and Margaret (13) is the daughter who married John Dove. He may or may not have been the Immigrant who went to Virginia in 1638. It is not known if there is a connection.

William "of Wiltshire" Goldinge and Susanna ROBINETTE had the following children:

This family line does not appear to have left Wiltshire. They had the following children:

(20) She married Thomas Bishop, son of John Bishop and Elizabeth Humby, on 15 Oct 1632 in Downton, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. (21) He was born in 1610 in Downton, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. They had a daughter named Alice Bishop (22) and a son named Richard Bishop. (23) Both died in Wiltshire, and Richard was not the Richard Bishop who went to Massachusetts.

THOMAS BISHOP, the son of John Bishop and Elizabeth Humby was born in 1611 in Downton, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. (24) He married Martha Goldinge on 15 October 1632 in Downton.

Margaret Goldinge married John Dove of Christian Malford

MARGARET GOLDINGE, the daughter of William Goldinge and Susanna Robinett was born on 04 Apr 1607 in Downton, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England and was baptized on 4 April 1607 in Downton. (25) According to Virginia Immigration Records there was a John Dove who went to Virginia in 1638 but that immigrant may not even be the same person. “John Dove, Arrival Year 1638 Arrival Place Virginia Primary Immigrant Dove, John” (26) Immigration has not been confirmed to have a link to John of Downton.

Margaret Goldinge married JOHN DOVE on 12 Oct 1629 in Downton, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. (27) He was born on 18 Jul 1605 in Christian Malford, Wiltshire, England. Their children were John (28), Richard, Henry and David Dove. John Dove may have been a Quaker.

The US and Canada, Passenger and Immigration Lists Index states that there was a man named John Dove who went to Virginia, USA in 1638 but he is listed as the primary immigrant. (29)

Easily confused are:

John Dove of Salisbury, England - He married Elizabeth Biggs and was the High Sheriff of Wiltshire.

John Dove of Downton

There was a will filed in Wiltshire, Johannes Dove and he names sons John and Thomas as well as a daughter Mary. This is not the same John Dove of Wiltshire. (30)

John Dove, Quaker – He died on 31 August 1669 in Titherton and at the time of his death was residing in Christian Malford. (31)

iv. ELIZABETH GOLDINGE, the daughter of William Goldinge and Susanna Robinett was born in 1610 in Downton, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England and she died on 20 Apr 1612 (32) at the age of 2 years in Downton, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. (33)

Thomas Goldinge

v. THOMAS GOLDINGE, the son of William Goldinge and Susanna Robinett was born in 1613 in Meysey Hampton, Gloucestershire, England and he was baptized on 19 September 1613 in Meysey Hampton. (34) The date of his death is not recorded. Like so many of his siblings, he probably either died young or in infancy.

Susannah Goldinge

vi. SUSANNAH GOLDINGE, the daughter of William Goldinge (35) and Susanna Robinett was born on 13 May 1613 in Downton, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England (36) and was baptized on the same day in Downton. (37) The date of her death is not recorded. She probably (not confirmed) either died young or in infancy.

Christopher Goldinge

vii. CHRISTOPHER GOLDINGE, the son of William Goldinge and Susanna Robinett was baptized on 04 Oct 1617 in Meysey Hampton, Gloucestershire, England. "Christopher the sonne of William Goulding was buried the __ day of October 1617" (38) He died on 12 Oct 1617 in Meysey Hampton. He died in infancy. There was another Christopher Goldinge of Wiltshire who married Eleanor and they had a daughter named Anne who died in June of 1668. (39) That family stayed in Wiltshire, and he and Christopher Goldinge who died in 1617 are not the same person.

viii. MARY GOLDINGE, the daughter of William Goldinge (40) and Susanna Robinett was born on 11 May 1622 in Meysey Hampton, Gloucestershire, England. (41) She probably died either young or in infancy as there is no death date to be found for her.

ix. EDWARD GOLDINGE, the son of William Goldinge and Susannah Robinett was born in 1624 in Meysey Hampton, Gloucestershire, England and was baptized on 20 February 1624 (42) in Meysey Hampton. (43) He appears to have been born and died on the same day.
